Gardening – Getting Started & Next Steps

Creating a Play Garden for Our Children

A garden, whether big or small, means so much generally for people, for this is the place that kids especially can run or learn about plants and simply enjoy what outdoor brings. Homeowners with big spaces are fortunate, but for those who are living in the inner city with an apartment and a balcony only, having an outside space for even a small yard is a treasure. If you have a starting family with small children, it is not fun and healthy for the little ones to be inside the house most of the time, and so if you can manage to transform a space into a garden or yard, even if it is just small, this will be a relaxing and fun environment for the kids.

There are some limitations to create an outdoor area but it is possible to make a child-friendly garden even with just a few square feet size, because all you need is just a bit of imagination. There are some pointers for you to create this perfect small family garden.

The first thing is to make space by getting rid of all the clutter. With your limited space, you should make it a point to gain access of every inch of your available space. Thus, this would mean, you looking for another alternative area to store the things in that space where you will make the garden, and also throw those things that you do not need anymore. Remember that the more space you can make available, the more space you have for your playground.

No matter how small your balcony garden will be, remember that every garden should have some sort of grass, and this is your second tip. Remember that grass, unlike concrete or asphalt, is a safer surface and it brings freshness and life to your yard. If your space is not big enough for grass to put in, or you have a yard that does not get any sunshine, then you can consider using artificial grass. These artificial grass looks and feels like real grass, and it has the softness that is safe for children to play on, plus it requires less maintenance than the real turf, and can be installed in any area.

Your next tip is to have a vegetable patch in your garden, even if it is small. It is another great way to have kids spend some time outdoor, helping in taking care of the garden, and learn some things about plants and bees along the way.

Another idea for the family to fully use the small yard, is for mom and dad to use fold-away furniture whenever they occupy the space, and take it out after using it in order to leave open the space for children to play around.
